Starlet GT Stock Front Disk Brakes w/ Toyota Brown Pads

The first conversion I made to my Toyota Starlet EP82 was during the period that the car was not turbo charged. At that time, having the stock 2E-FE engine(75hp), although there was no need for serious brake power, I decided to install the front brake system of a Toyota Starlet GT.

The brakes fitted straight forward with no modifications at all.

The pads I was using where Toyota’s brown pads, that are better than the black ones.

With this combination of brakes and pads I was able to stop the car fast and without noticing brake power loss even after 6-7 continious laps at Megara Circuit.

Pads and discs duration was very good. I was changing pads every 6 months and their price was around 50 euro. I never had to change the discs.

Toyota Starlet GT Stock Front Disk Brakes w/ Ferodo DS3000 Pads

After swaping the N/A engine of my Toyota Starlet EP82 with the turbocharged GT engine the need of new stronger brakes emerged. Braking at the end of the longest straight at Megara Circuit was over the limits of the stock GT brake pads I was using.

Due to the need of more braking power I decided to go with a racing pad for the GT calipers. I chose Ferodo DS3000. After installing them I followed the bedding in instructions and hit the road to Megara Circuit. The feeling and power of these pads where unbelievable; they completelly transformed the car. Now I could do several laps and the pads were performing very good.

But...

As a racing pad it isn't supposed to be used in a daily driver. I was using the Toyota Starlet EP82 to go at work etc. So at approximately 1000 km the pads and the rotors were left with minimum material on them. I decided that due the the cost of these pads(around 180euro) I had to find an other solution...

Wilwood Dynalite Front Custom Kit

So due to the need of a caliper with a less costy pad I decided to install Wilwood 4-pot calipers. Ferodo is making pads for many calipers and amongst them, Wilwood. The cost of these pads are very low, around 80euro.

I used Toyota Levin disks that are 275x25 and fit the P.C.D. of the EP. I also made custom brakets and braded lines. The pad I used from Ferodo was 1.11 that is a racing pad with the endurance of a street one at cold conditions(i.e. street use).

I was left of a very possitive impression of that kit. Never had issues with overheating no mater if I made 10-12 continuous laps. The only thing I decided to change were the pads. They just didn't have the feeling of DS3000. Unfortunatelly I forgot to change the worn 1.11 with the new DS000 before a track-day and wrecked my car.

So...! IF YOUR PADS HAVE VERY LITTLE MATERIAL ON THEM GO CHANGE THEM! No matter if your friend keeps telling you that the pads will last performance braking, you must CHANGE THEM! :)
